The Lost Scriptures Unlock the New Testament

NINT 2026 gathers thirteen world-renowned biblical scholars to explore the writings that surrounded, rivaled, and shaped the New Testament: lost gospels, disputed letters, rediscovered acts, martyrdom stories, infancy traditions, and apocalypses that many Christians once read, copied, debated, and sometimes treated as Scripture.

These texts did not make it into the New Testament. But they help explain the New Testament.

They reveal what early Christians believed about Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Judas, Peter, Paul, salvation, martyrdom, miracle, magic, women’s authority, and the afterlife. They show us what questions early Christians were asking, what stories they were telling, and why certain books eventually became “the New Testament” while others were left outside.

Across two days, you’ll hear a keynote from Mark Goodacre, eight main-day lectures with live Q&A, and four pre-recorded special presentations. Every session is designed for intelligent lay readers: no academic background required, no scholarship watered down.

Who it is for

Believers, skeptics, seekers, history buffs.

Christians

See how the boundaries of your Bible were actually drawn, and why that story deepens rather than threatens faith.

Non-believers

Trace how a sprawling library of early Christian writings was narrowed into a single canon.

Seekers & skeptics

Explore the gospels that did not make the cut with balance and intellectual honesty.

History buffs

Meet the lost scriptures, forgeries, and rediscovered manuscripts behind the New Testament.

Dr. Bart D. Ehrman

“The books that made it into the New Testament were not the only ones early Christians wrote, read, and revered. To understand how we got our Bible, you have to reckon with the many that got left out.”

Beyond the Canonical Four: Why the Apocryphal Gospels Matter
Dr. Mark Goodacre · Duke University

There’s a bias built into how we read the Bible. We treat the four official gospels as the only ones worth knowing, while assuming the apocryphal gospels “just don’t matter.” We ignore them because we think they are silly, irrelevant, confusing, or even heretical. But here’s the catch. If the only gospels you know are the four in the Bible, you don’t actually know those four very well either. You can’t see what made them distinctive, what they competed with, or why they won.
